Many of our families choose to take cloth diapers with them when they travel! If your baby is sensitive to disposables, then this might be the way you want to go. Whether trekking by air or car, traveling with a baby is an adventure, and when you add cloth diapers to the mix, it might seem daunting at first. But with some planning and the right tips, using cloth diapers while away from home can be stress-free and keep your baby from diaper rash. Here’s everything you need to know to make your cloth diaper journey a smooth one.
1. Plan Your Diaper Supply
One of the first things to consider is how many diapers you’ll need for the duration of your trip. A good rule of thumb is to pack about 1.5 times the number of diapers you would typically use at home each day. For a weekend getaway, this might mean bringing 15-20 diapers. Depending on how long you’re away, you may be planning to wash your diapers at your destination. If that is the case, you probably won’t need more than 15-20 diapers since you will wash them every couple of days. If you’re leaving for less than a week and plan to have your diaper service wash them when you return, bring what you would normally use in a week. (Remember, soiled diapers will mold after about a week, so it’s important to plan accordingly so the diapers aren’t permanently damaged).
2. Choose the Right Diaper Types
For traveling, consider using all-in-one diapers for convenience since they’re easy to put on and remove. If you prefer prefolds, ensure you have enough covers to rotate between changes. Covers can often be wiped and reused several times before needing a wash, making them a versatile option for trips.
3. Packing Accessories: Don’t Forget the Essentials
Make sure to pack:
- Wet Bags: Bring at least two large wet bags and/or your regular pail liner for storing soiled diapers during the day.
- Diaper Liners: Bamboo Flushable Liners can make clean-up easier, especially when you’re not near a toilet.
- Cloth-Friendly Detergent: A travel-sized detergent that’s safe for cloth diapers is a must if you plan on washing them on the go. We love Meliora’s Unscented Detergent!
- Wipes: Cloth wipes that can be washed with the diapers or a stash of biodegradable disposable wipes.
4. Create a Washing Plan
If you’re staying with family or at an accommodation with laundry facilities, you’re in luck! Plan to wash your diapers every 2-3 days. Bring your cloth-friendly detergent and know the laundry setup in advance.

5. Day Trips and Outings
When venturing out for day trips during your travel, pack enough diapers for the day and include a travel-size wet bag. Change your baby as you normally would and store soiled diapers in the wet bag until you return to your lodging.
6. Tips for Air Travel
If you’re flying, pack enough diapers for the flight and a little extra in case of delays. Bring your wet bag, wipes, and a changing pad in your carry-on for easy access. Diaper covers are great here too, as they can be wiped down and reused.
8. Stay Flexible
Traveling can be unpredictable, and it’s okay to mix in some disposable diapers if needed. The most important thing is to find a balance that works for you and keeps your baby comfortable. We offer our families the option of taking cloth diapers with them or swapping out that week for Nest Disposable Diapers instead.
Traveling with cloth diapers may require a little more planning, but it’s completely doable. With the right supplies, a washing plan, and some flexibility, you can enjoy your trip without sacrificing your commitment to cloth diapering. So pack those adorable diapers, hit the road, and enjoy your journey with peace of mind!
